Lycanthrope Leo story by Kengo Kaji and art by Kenji Okamura and published by Viz Media
The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists.
Today we are looking at "Lycanthrope Leo" volume 1 written by Kengo Kaji and art by Kenji Okamura and published in the United States by Viz Media.
The volume I bought was volume 1. This book was beautiful. It gives off a Battle Royale art style but it is not illustrated by Masayuki Taguchi-San. The theme is very Shonen and very action based. The series is considered more for adults and does not shy away from extreme violence, death or nudity. It is a great read but it is cautioned to read this in public. The plot is very detailed and fleshes out the characters a lot and you feel attached to most of them.
I will not ruin the story but the theme is action based and focuses on creatures and monsters. It justifies its plot and does some great art work when it comes to theme. The backgrounds and characters are both highly detailed. It is a great read but get ready for some serious disappointment if you do. As amazing as this story is, it was never finished. I looked and all I was able to find was this one book and it leaves on the ultimate cliff hanger. I am not even sure if the series was ever finished in Japan and my searches lead to everything stopping abruptly after volume 2.
Now the art work is very detailed in this volume and I have faith that it would have been just as amazing if it continued. The characters feel very real and express very believable emotions in their scenarios.
I finished this book and felt compelled to read more but there will be nothing for this franchise. Sadly this is a manga no longer on the local book shelves but Viz translated this one book. This series will never be finished so I do not recommend it unless you want some amazing art work. The book is pretty cheap on ebay but do not feel afraid to check local stores for cheaper options. I do not recommend this book because you will feel a void that will never be filled.
Score time:
Art: 6 / 10
Story: 4 / 10
Flow of book: 6 / 10
Impression after reading: a sadness that I will never fill (discontinued)
