the Gods lie. by Kaori Ozaki and published by Vertical comics

The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists.

Today we are looking at "the Gods lie." by Kaori Ozaki and published in the United States by Vertical Comics.

The volume I bought is the only volume in the whole series. This is a book about poverty and about growing up and experiencing life as an adult. It is a very touching book and deserves praise but keep in mind that it will strike a cord in you unless you are a heartless rich person who shuns commoners. The book dives into topics that most people would consider taboo like bad parenting, death and true poverty. It is a great read and it is a very thought out book and you will feel that the artist is trying to help change you as a human. It is not action based and focuses on realism and is set through the point of view of a child in middle school.

the Gods lie. is written and drawn by Kaori Ozaki and it is done in a more 2010 type style. It is a book that focuses heavily on tone and will not venture outside the norm when it comes to typical manga style. It has a very Shojo style but keeps most of its panels like a Shonen so you can feel it blend between the two. There is not to much of a focus on backgrounds but Ozaki-san does great on characters and setting the mood with pure emotion. There is not much action since it is a drama so there is no real emphasis on dynamic poses or unbelievable posture so the story's focus on emotion is not hindered and you are able to dive into the story.

The art of this story is detailed for characters and lacks emphasis on backgrounds but Ozaki-san goes to great lengths to give you a complete work of art. The story flows very well and it is just slow enough to make you want more by the end of the book. The story is deep and sad but a great read non-the-less. The story will have you guessing about how it will end and play with your emotions a tad bit.

This is an finished series and it was a great read. The manga cover is made of a more sturdy material and does not seem to damage easily. It is $12.95 in price, so a little higher than your average manga but the cover material alone makes it worth that extra few pennies. This is a great add if you are interested in artistic books and feel like getting away from the typical YATTA!, and KABOOM! of typical Shonen comics.

Score time:

Art: 4 / 10
Story: 8 / 10
Flow of book: 6 / 10
Impression after reading: great artistic book
