Girls & Panzer vol. 4 by Girls Und Panzer Project and published by Seven Seas review
The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists.
Today we are looking at "Girls & Panzer" volume 4 by Girls Und Panzer Proiect and published in the United States by Seven Seas.
The volume I bought was volume 4. Now I want to give a brief warning. This is the end of the story so do not start with this volume. It is a four part mini series. It is a fairly thick manga so you will invest a bit of time in reading this one. It has a few glossy colored pages in the beginning but the rest is typical manga format where everything is black and white.
I will not ruin the story but the theme is tanks, Tanks, TANKS! It is an intriguing story to where they put a lot of emphasis on tanks and focus less on the characters. It gives an odd feeling. I like the overall art work for the tanks but the characters seem very plain. I literally found myself trying to figure out who was who. Plus the style of characters is typical early 2000s where they are very simplified.
Now the art work is very detailed when it comes to the tanks and the action but they put a lot less emphasis on characters. The artists really wanted you to focus on those tanks no matter what. It hurts the story a bit but it is cool to see something about tanks even though its kinda hard to imagine an 80 pound high school girl lifting a tank shell that weighs 100 pounds (my father was a tanker in the United States Military) but I guess its magical if you do not know details like that. It was a fun read that tried to be very serious with a non-serious plot. Now the central plot is that schools can afford tanks so they have mock tank battles. Cool right in a rich person / pesky peasants kind way?
I finished this book and did not feel to compelled to get the others to read more. Sadly the theme is very cool but the story and characters are very lackluster. It only has four volumes so it is a fun quick read if you are interested in things of that nature. A full manga set for everyone! The books are pretty cheap on ebay but do not feel afraid to check local stores for cheaper options. I don't recommend this book if you want to be blown away but if you are bored... then have at it with all four volumes in one sitting.
Score time:
Art: 5 / 10
Story: 2 / 10
Flow of book: 4 / 10
Impression after reading: meh
