Haganai I don't have many friends volume 2 published by Seven Seas review
The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists.
Today we are looking at "Haganai I don't have many friends" volume 2 by Yomi Hirasaka and art by Itachi and published in the United States by Seven Seas.
The volume I bought was volume 2. I bought the second volume to get past the pesky origin story but the book recaps most of that fairly quickly. The theme is the main character is a guy and he moves back to his own town after being away for several years and he has to adapt to a new school and life. It is a comedy and focuses on how he can't make friends because he looks like a bully (he seriously has a severe case of resting bitch face syndrome). So it is about how he deals with people all the while making friends with some of the worst people in the school. I am referring to the girls in this book of course. These girls are terrible people but it is hilarious to see it all in action.
I will not ruin the story but the theme is comedy and they do a lot of puns off of themes. It isn't a Sgt. Frog comedy but more along the lines of Welcome to the N.H.K. or Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It is more for the mature audiences and isn't afraid to mess with twisted topics. It all takes place during high school and shares in their adventures. It has more a realistic theme so it doesn't dive into to much action but it is worth a read just for the laughs.
Now this is one of those interesting mangas where there is an artist and a writer. Itachi-san and Hirasaka-San play really well off of each other and it gives a very unified feel to the complete work. The art work focuses less on the backgrounds and gives a nice feel to the characters. It has a very shonen feel with the lay out and this book is not for kids in any way. It dives into porn, not being able to swim, bullying and other topics that may give a you a glace or two in public. I highly advise to be careful reading this in public. There is no nudity in the volume I read so far but I would not be surprised if there was any in the future volumes.
I finished this book and felt very compelled to read more. It is an ongoing franchise and has 14 volumes as of now (that I know of). It does not seem to focus on any particular theme as of yet but maybe it will in the future. It is a pretty good series to start if you love comedies that focus more on realism.
Score time:
Art: 6 / 10
Story: 5 / 10
Flow of book: 7 / 10
Impression after reading: want more
