She and Her cat By Makoto Shinkai and illustrated by Tsubasa Yamaguchi and published by Vertical Comics
The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists.
Today we are looking at "She and Her Cat" by Makoto Shinkai and illustrated by Tsubasa Yamaguchi and published in the United States by Vertical Comics.
The volume I bought is a stand alone volume and it is the story in its entirety. The book is written by Makoto Shinkai. If the name sounds familiar, it should. Shinkai-San is the creator of famous movies as Your Name, Voices of a Distant Star and 5 Centimeters Per Second. The back story of Shinkai is extremely amazing and he rose through the fields of animation, manga and story telling with the strength of a shooting star and has made some of the most academy acclaimed films of anime history. The book She and Her Cat is a manga adaptation of the five minute short film that is included in the USA dvd release of Voices of a Distant Star.
I will not ruin the story but the theme is everyday life and what life is like just living and trying to find your way. It is told through the point of view of a cat and his owner and shows how the cat loves and feels for his master and her life trying to live with the pressure of living on her own as a single person who is pressured into settling down as an adult. It is a very touching story and as a single person myself, very deep and heart touching.
Now the art work is sorta sloppy but it has its own charm in many ways. It feels complete and the only quirks I have with it are the occasional bad anatomy from every few pages. The backgrounds are very well drawn and besides the characters and cats, it is pretty realistic in its representations. It is not a comedy, action or drama story so there is no real emphasis on sound effects or dynamic drawing. It is a slow paced book and tells a beautiful story. You will not see a dynamic story board but one that flows smoothly. I loved this story deeply and it made me feel pretty happy with its ending.
I finished this book and felt satisfied. It gives you a feeling of calm and was a nice non-Shonen / Shojo book and didn't feel anything stereotypical. This manga is currently on the shelf and is feeling the boost from the Your Name movie release and all its fandom. I recommend this book if you want something beautiful that has a pretty good story and is art focused. The book is on the shelf now and retails about $12.95 in the USA but you should be able to find it for cheaper online. I highly recommend this book.
