Flying Witch volume 1 by Chihiro Ishizuka and published by Vertical Comics

The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists.

Today we are looking at "Flying Witch" by Chihiro Ishizuka and published in the United States by Vertical Comics.

The volume I bought is the first volume in an ongoing series. How best to describe this comic... well I think I can post a picture that explains everything.

.

Flying Witch is a comedy series about Makoto Kowata and her move to a rural town so she can focus on becoming a witch. So it is a story of self enlightenment and discovery...

Oh, I am pulling your chain. This is a story about Makoto and how she is adapting to living in a new home with her cousins. She is a witch and her entire family knows about the witch-world. Just like in Harry Potter, no one knows about the witch world but witches and their family. So, Makoto being the air head she is, is willing to expose everything to everyone no matter the situation. It revolves around legends, mystical beasts and how everyone is not realizing how much of our world is really controlled by elements that we are unaware of. It is a great comedy and it does things that I have not seem in a long time. It takes the recent every-day-life comedy boom of animation (Welcome to the N.H.K., Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and K-on) and composes it perfectly into a manga that anyone can enjoy.

The art of this story is beauty and Ishizuka-san is clearly a master at page layouts. The story flows so fluidly and you don't even realize there is no major plot to follow. You are taken for a ride that you didn't even realize you wanted to go on until the very end. The characters are very fleshed out and you can easily tell them apart in the story. The backgrounds are basic village / rural city landscapes but they change enough to add some fresh air to the story.

This is an ongoing series and it was a great read. It has some extremely humorous moments and you will feel compelled to get the next book just to read more about Makoto's antics. It is great for all ages and has a innocence factor that will make you grin all silly-like. It goes for around $10.95 but this is a book that is worth every penny. I suggest finding it no matter how you do it because you will laugh yourself into a coma.

Score time:

Art: 5 / 10
Story: 4 / 10
Flow of book: 7 / 10
Impression after reading: hilarious
