Grave of the Fireflies movie review produced by Studio Ghibli and published by Disney or Gkids

The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics, unknown animation and underground artists.

Today we are looking at an animated movie called "Grave of the Fireflies" created by Studio Ghibli and published in the United States by Disney or Gkids.

The dvd that we are looking at is a relatively famous movie but it is one the lessor known Studio Ghibli films because of its content and adult theme. It was directed by Isao Takahata. Takahata-san is the other side of Studio Ghibli that most people do not talk about. Everyone knowns Miyazaki-san but Takahata-san is the one who made movies like Pom Poko, Only Yesterday, and My Neighbors the Yamadas.

This movie is about two kids growing up during the final days of World War II. It is through the point of view of Seita and focuses on him and his young sister Setsuko. The focus of the movie is that the American bombers dropped incendiary bombs on their town and it makes them homeless and they are trying to do everything in their power to survive. It is quite a tear jerker and its a very sad movie. It shows the harshness of war and how cruel humans can be in general. It is a very sad movie and it was quite a surprise to see Studio Ghibli make it.

Now the focus on this movie is clear and it is mainly about how war changes people and how they treat one another. It is through the eyes of two innocent kids who are just trying to survive but the film is made in such a beautiful way. It is a very neutral colored movie and gives off this sad feeling with its color choices. The music is very beautiful and curves to the soft side.

The story is an interesting concept and it won numerous awards. It is directed by the side of Ghibli that no one ever talks about so that was a treat. I found the movie beautiful but horribly depressing and to find out that it is mostly based on real events involving Akiyuki Nosaka:

The movie is beautiful and a must watch. It is not a movie meant for kids and it shows a side of World War II that no one talks about.

Score time:

Art: 7/ 10
Story: 9 / 10
Flow of movie: 6 / 10
Impression after reading: sad but pleasing
