Tropic of the Sea by Satoshi Kon and published by Vertical Comics

Image
The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists. Today we are looking at "Tropic of the Sea" by Satoshi Kon and published in the United States by Vertical Comics. The volume I bought is the only volume for this series. The comic is a stand alone and the plot is completely finished by the end of the book. Now, if you are not aware, Satoshi Kon-San died several years back so this book is all we are going to get with this particular franchise. Kon-San is a famous anime director and has brought works like Paprika and Tokyo Godfathers to the big screen across the world. Now... did I mention that Satoshi Kon-San is an artist and made his own mangas from time to time? This is one of those beauties. I will not ruin the story but the theme is about real life mixing with family dedication and a tad of mysticism. The story revolves around a boy who is ending his high school life and he is about to leave a small town ...

Lycanthrope Leo story by Kengo Kaji and art by Kenji Okamura and published by Viz Media

The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists. Today we are looking at "Lycanthrope Leo" volume 1 written by Kengo Kaji and art by Kenji Okamura and published in the United States by Viz Media. The volume I bought was volume 1. This book was beautiful. It gives off a Battle Royale art style but it is not illustrated by  Masayuki Taguchi-San. The theme is very Shonen and very action based. The series is considered more for adults and does not shy away from extreme violence, death or nudity. It is a great read but it is cautioned to read this in public. The plot is very detailed and fleshes out the characters a lot and you feel attached to most of them.  I will not ruin the story but the theme is action based and focuses on creatures and monsters. It justifies its plot and does some great art work when it comes to theme. The backgrounds and characters are both highly detailed. It is a great read but ge...

She and Her cat By Makoto Shinkai and illustrated by Tsubasa Yamaguchi and published by Vertical Comics

The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists. Today we are looking at "She and Her Cat" by Makoto Shinkai and illustrated by Tsubasa Yamaguchi and published in the United States by Vertical Comics. The volume I bought is a stand alone volume and it is the story in its entirety. The book is written by Makoto Shinkai. If the name sounds familiar, it should. Shinkai-San is the creator of famous movies as Your Name, Voices of a Distant Star and 5 Centimeters Per Second. The back story of Shinkai is extremely amazing and he rose through the fields of animation, manga and story telling with the strength of a shooting star and has made some of the most academy acclaimed films of anime history. The book She and Her Cat is a manga adaptation of the five minute short film that is included in the USA dvd release of Voices of a Distant Star. I will not ruin the story but the theme is everyday life and what life is l...

Battle Angel Alita Mars Chronicles volume 1 by Yukito Kishiro and published by Kodansha

Image
The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists. Today we are looking at "Battle Angel Alita Mars Chronicles" volume 1 by Yukito Kishiro and published in the United States by Kodansha Comics. A word of warning for anyone that does not know the Battle Angel / Gunnm franchise. This is the third series in the overall story. It starts with Battle Angel / Gunnm, then moves to Battle Angel Alita Last Order / Gunnm Last Order, and then to Mars Chronicles. So pick this book up if it intrigues you but you will need to start from Battle Angel in order to get all the plot points. Now, a word of warning about this franchise. I am extremely biased towards it and I consider Yukito Kishiro-San one of the best artists and story tellers I have ever seen in a manga artist. Now, with that in mind, lets dive into this book. The books are designed in a Shonen (boys) comic style and it is very action oriented. The artist is n...

Hello everyone. We are doing some power reading to start the next review and picked up some American, Chinese, Canadian and Japanese comics that everyone will enjoy. We will also begin reviewing some anime and animation films too. We will stay away from animation series for the moment but that may change in the future. I hope you enjoy our reviews! Harry Kohles

Haganai I don't have many friends volume 2 published by Seven Seas review

Image
The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists. Today we are looking at "Haganai I don't have many friends" volume 2 by Yomi Hirasaka and art by Itachi and published in the United States by Seven Seas. The volume I bought was volume 2. I bought the second volume to get past the pesky origin story but the book recaps most of that fairly quickly. The theme is the main character is a guy and he moves back to his own town after being away for several years and he has to adapt to a new school and life. It is a comedy and focuses on how he can't make friends because he looks like a bully (he seriously has a severe case of resting bitch face syndrome). So it is about how he deals with people all the while making friends with some of the worst people in the school. I am referring to the girls in this book of course. These girls are terrible people but it is hilarious to see it all in action. I will not ru...

Girls & Panzer vol. 4 by Girls Und Panzer Project and published by Seven Seas review

Image
The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists. Today we are looking at "Girls & Panzer" volume 4 by Girls Und Panzer Proiect and published in the United States by Seven Seas. The volume I bought was volume 4. Now I want to give a brief warning. This is the end of the story so do not start with this volume. It is a four part mini series. It is a fairly thick manga so you will invest a bit of time in reading this one. It has a few glossy colored pages in the beginning but the rest is typical manga format where everything is black and white. I will not ruin the story but the theme is tanks, Tanks, TANKS! It is an intriguing story to where they put a lot of emphasis on tanks and focus less on the characters. It gives an odd feeling. I like the overall art work for the tanks but the characters seem very plain. I literally found myself trying to figure out who was who. Plus the style of characters is typi...

Firefighter! Daigo of Fire Company M Volume 10 by Masahito Soda and published by Viz Media review

Image
Today is my very first post so I apologize in advance. The goal of my blog is to share the joy and love I have for unknown comics and underground artists. Today we are looking at "Firefighter! Daigo of Fire Company M" volume 10 by Masahito Soda and published in the United States by Viz Media. The volume I bought was volume 10. Now I am not one who normally likes to dive into the middle of a story but I am extremely happy I did it for this. This was one of the most exciting and indepth mangas that has ever crossed my hands. It looks gorgeous, it reads very maturely and I felt drawn to the cast. I was actually drawn into a comic about fire fighting... It was amazing! Now the best part about this is that the story flowed so well that I originally intended to read about thirty pages and finished the whole book in one sitting! I will not ruin the story but the theme is action based with a high ting of realism. Do not expect magical girls but since the main characte...

Starting a legacy

Image
Hello everyone. My name is Harry Kohles and I live in Metairie, Louisiana. I am a former art student and lover of great art and comics. I started this blog to showcase mangas, comics and amazing artists that you may or may not know. I will dive into mainly Japanese, Chinese and Asian based comics but I will sway from time to time. I promise no Stan Lee or other main stream stuff. Pure and goofy fun for all of us! *My very first review (Firefighter! Daigo of Fire Company M by Masahito Soda) was posted under pages earlier... I will fix that later on* Enjoy!
